‘Texting the Dragon’
Diptych, 48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
The yin traveler, absorbed by her mobile device, somehow connects with the mythical symbol of yang.
‘Return of Samurai Kitty’
30″ x 40″
Acrylic on Canvas
I did a painting called Samurai Kitty about ten years ago, so this one is a redux —something out of an Akira Kurosawa flick.
‘Spyglass Hero’
48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
The ultimate act of observation, going straight to the prefrontal cortex—proof of mighty otaku awesomeness!
‘Love, Hot as Lava’
16″ x 20″
Acrylic on Canvas
The Shōjo heroine leaps past lava, hot coals, and into the uncertainty of the forest, overtaken by the power of love.
‘The Explorers’
48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
Inspired by Chinese landscape painting and Japanese mahō shōjo (magical girl) anime and manga.
The young protagonist nears a village with her feline friends.
‘Little Red Ronin’
12″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
The day this Onna-Bugeisha (a female samurai) became a ronin (a wandering samurai who had no lord or master).
‘On the Edge’
30″ x 30″
Acrylic on Canvas
Despite my fear of heights, I’ve got to admit that some of my peak experiences were literally on top of mountains.
The anime protagonist surveys the chasm under the cherry blossoms, expressing this feeling of
being on top of the world and right up to the edge of life.
‘Convergence’
48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
Inspired by Japanese anime, the yin and yang forces meet in an epic discovery to claim magical knowledge.
‘Moonlight Lillies’
48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
The protagonist and her fur babies meditate upon the lilly pond. I think I feel a children’s book coming.
‘Hokusai: Dreams of Super Mecha’
24″ x 30″
Acrylic on Canvas
What can be a more convincing sign that you are in serious otaku mode than contemplating a glorious super mecha?
‘The Master’
24″ x 20″
Acrylic on Canvas
Inspired by Japanese anime, namely Hayao Miyazaki, the real master.
‘Arrival of the Cosplayers’
48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
There’s a fine line between anime and cosplay, especially when silhouettes are involved. (I like silhouettes.
They’re like reading a novel and using your imagination to visualize the characters) These adventures have stopped to explore a bit.
Who knows what fun, mayhem, and epic excitement will ensue…
‘The Stars are Waiting’
12″ x 36″
Acrylic on Canvas
The heroine has much on her mind, the night full of possibilities.
‘Beyond Comicon’
48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
My longtime love of Chinese landscape painting and the type of people that one meets
at a comics and anime convention inspired this work on canvas.
‘A Kaiju for You’
12″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
Time freezes as the great kaiju is about to blast away with a heat ray and as his foot is about to pound the earth beneath.
‘Primal Scream Therapy’
36″ x 36″
Mixed Media on Canvas
This is my attempt to capture the high-energy hijinks of Japanese anime,
combining the ancient with the contemporary.
‘Lanterns’
48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Masonite
There are times when things start looking dark, but big beautiful lanterns appear to light the way.
Be grateful for all the things that keep you going. Hope, inspiration, and benevolence in a seemingly uncaring world do exist.
Some of our friends are angels in disguise. And some people that we will never meet have
nourished or healed our souls beyond what they’ll ever know. Thanks to all.
‘Temple of the Golden Pavilion’
48″ x 24″
Mixed Media on Canvas
This painting is a tribute to Kohei Horikoshi, Koyoharu Gotouge, and many other Japanese anime and manga artists.
I juxtaposed silhouettes with the Kinkaku-ji temple in Kyoto.
‘Are They Like Us?’
30″ x 40″
Acrylic on Canvas
I used a mixture of acrylic brushstrokes and drips to create textures and forms and then try to imagine anime characters inhabiting the space.
The individuals are inspired by Kohei Horikoshi and the vocaloid, Hatsune Miku
‘Lake Sonnet’
12″ x 36″
Acrylic on Canvas
A slightly theatrical and Art Nouveau depiction of an anime heroine, possibly reciting Shakespeare.
‘The Other Side of Dystopia’
48″ x 24″
Acrylic on Canvas
A strange dream (say no more, say no more…).
‘Broken Ladder’
40″ x 30″
Acrylic on Canvas
The ladder has just fallen away and is out of reach of our hero. Will this be the last exploration to the heights of the world?
Or does such a sublime ascent forever conquer the depths?
‘Eternal Board’
16″ x 20″
Acrylic on Canvas
The Samurai, every bit as spiritual and disciplined as a monk, speeds past the heat and cold to meet destiny.
