‘I Find You Interesting’
30″ x 40″
Mixed Media on Canvas
A mirror to my fascination with stylized Japanese anime characters and their big eyes.
The tilted head gives away her secret curiosity and wonder. The mutual feeling is infinite.
‘Lots and Lots and Lots of Tiny Changes’
40″ x 30″
Acrylic on Canvas
Featuring my youngest granddaughter, the lion examines a caterpillar while the angel looks at the butterfly,
the symbol of transformation. The golden background radiates possibilities.
‘Primal Scream Therapy’
36″ x 36″
Mixed Media on Canvas
This is my attempt to capture the high-energy hijinks of Japanese anime,
combining the ancient with the new.
‘Red Scarf’
24″ x 30″
Mixed Media on Canvas
A bit more to the minimalist approach, the manga girl is inspired by Japanese anime,
street art, and Chinese ink wash paintings.
‘Knowing’
40″ x 30″
Acrylic on Canvas
Built up in many layers of thick rough-textured paint, the anime girl realizes in a moment of stillness that something momentous has happened.
Her tiny mouth accepts that the truth is beyond words.
‘Temple of the Golden Pavilion’
48″ x 24″
Mixed Media on Canvas
This painting is a tribute to Kohei Horikoshi, Koyoharu Gotouge, and many other Japanese anime and manga artists.
I juxtaposed silhouettes with the Kinkaku-ji temple in Kyoto.
‘Satirizing the Susuwatari’
24″ x 48″
Mixed Media on Canvas
Homage to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli films —a humorous contrast between tradition and a magical world of soot sprites.
‘The Dragonfly Princess’
18″ x 24″
Mixed Media on Paper
One of my earliest anime-style renderings,—inspired by my first trip to Asia. The dragonfly symbolizes happiness since it can fly in any direction,
including backward and upside down. The qipao that she wears features a road that leads to a mansion owned by nobility.
‘Honor (Waiting at the Bus Stop)’
Donated to Sandpiper Elementary School, Sunrise, Florida
Mixed Media on Canvas
A mixture of old, new, and pop culture, Honor features samurai playing video games and reading manga.
A girl waits at a bus stop along with many other interesting characters, including dogs and wooden kokeshi dolls.
